FORMULA 1: Bahrain Grand Prix canceled

The Kingdom of Bahrain withdrew to organize the March 13 Grand Prix Sahki, which was to open the Formula 1 season, because of unrest in the country, according to an official statement issued Monday.

"Right now, the attention of the entire nation is focused on the establishment of a new national dialogue," the statement said, adding that it was "important for the country to focus on issues of interest National and leaving the home of the Grand Prix of Bahrain at a later date. "

No date was specified for a possible postponement.

Sunday, Bernie Ecclestone, the boss of Formula 1, had ruled that the GP opening to take place in another country on March 13, explaining that the deadlines were too short for another organization to fit into the calendar.

The GP2 Series races (F1 row), which were to take place last week on the same Sakhir circuit in Bahrain, were canceled because of anti-government protests.

Monday of the repression of popular protest movement, launched Feb. 14, was seven dead.

In this small Gulf kingdom with a Shiite majority, the protesters have radicalized their demands Monday calling for the end of the dynasty of Sunni Al-Khalifa.
